Around The Block

“The block” is our affectionate reference to the farmland our homestead sits on.

“…And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide…”

Genesis 24.63

I love going for a ride”around the block” in the late afternoon. “The block” is our affectionate reference to the farmland our homestead sits on. The building site takes up eight acres on the corner of the section, the rest is a gently rolling fields leading to the edge of Morgan Table. A county road boarders two of the four sides with section line trails completeing the four mile circuit.

The late afternoon atmosphere is often quiet and peaceful as the sun’s waning rays enrich the deeper, early evening hues. It’s a great time for reflection. On certain evenings, a golden glow basks the landscape, it’s effervescence imparts a special blessing to all who pause to notice: That fleeting moment just as the melting sun disolves into pool below earths distant rim.

Connie and I often make this run together in our Polaris Ranger side by side at the close of day. The open sides and bench seat invites sights, sounds and smells to our senses. There’s plenty of room for grand kids when they’re visiting! We watch the crops grow and the antelope roam.

As spring and summer unfolds, we look for signs of new life. We’re never in a hurry as we ramble along. Alert for the activity around us, we see the deer disappear into the coolies bordering the table; the upland game bird’s, pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse and Hungarian Partridge, darting to the cover of bordering fields, little coveys scurrying behind.

The melodic song of the meadowlark christen’s the passing of another day. Natures allure drew Isaac to meditate in the fields, an example for us to follow. No better time to be refreshed and appreciate the wonder of creation and majesty of our God. The God who made us stewards over all things he created for our provision and enjoyment.

“…it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.”

Eccleciastes 5.18

A farmer knows, the seeds we sow are the seeds we harvest. Except by God's grace, life works that way most of the time. I am deeply indebted to my creator, the one and only true God who gives life to all things by his grace, through his son Jesus Christ. I am grateful for the lessons I've learned from my farming heritage and the privilege of partnering in the cycle of life each new growing season.
