The Spirit of Truth

An incoherent standard of truth promotes confusion…

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with

you for ever…”

John 14.16

Are you willing to believe these comforting words? Then they are meant for you. They don’t bring comfort to the skeptics, scoffers and those who don’t want to hear them. Their meaning doesn’t penetrate the conscience of those who supplant faith in God, with their own exaggerated importance. The coronavirus outbreak confronts all of us with the limits our knowledge and our ability for self determination.

Christians allow these reminders of mankind’s vulnerabilities to draw us back to our Heavenly Father, the source of truth and ultimate purpose. Unbelievers, facing the same set of circumstances, are driven to despair and frantic measures to bolster their belief that they are in control of their lives. Mass media, and the twenty-four hour news cycle, provide an illusion of control, but with no moral compass, much of what we hear is simply noise.

To illustrate, lets look at the most recent news cycles. What do Russia Collusion and Corona Virus have in common? One is fiction and one is real, but both were treated to round the clock headlines from a hyperbolic media. Apart from God’s word, there is no common truth standard in the world. The worlds “Truth” is a vacillating standard driven by varying agendas which determines what is news worthy and how events are reported on.

Incoherent standards of truth promotes confusion on moral issues, like abortion. An arrogant humanistic world view seeks to place humanity in charge of the worlds climate. They seal their convictions with blind faith. Unwilling to contemplate their limits, they buttress their moral authority with circular reasoning. They assure themselves, among themselves, that what they believe is right: They come to believe that “truth” is what they make it to be.

Their brand of morality basked New York City landmarks in a pink glow of victory to celebrate a woman’s ongoing right to late term abortions (Partial birth abortions, are a barbaric procedure which partially delivers the baby feet first and then plunges a suction hose into the base of the baby’s skull to suction the brains out collapsing the head before completing delivery). Terminating the life of an unborn child, inches from delivery, becomes a women’s right in a world without a Godly standard of truth.

Warped values are not the product of modern culture but are as old as civilization itself. It’s the result of mankind’s puffed up view of themselves in the face of their Creator God. I can think of nothing that describes this modern condition better than these ancient words from the Apostle Paul.

“…becoming vain in their imaginations, their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man…”

Romans 1: 21-23

Our lives need not be this way. God offers grace freely to everyone. Today would be a good day to receive this gift of salvation and begin living under God’s authority in the light of his Word. It’s the hope of the world.

A farmer knows, the seeds we sow are the seeds we harvest. Except by God's grace, life works that way most of the time. I am deeply indebted to my creator, the one and only true God who gives life to all things by his grace, through his son Jesus Christ. I am grateful for the lessons I've learned from my farming heritage and the privilege of partnering in the cycle of life each new growing season.
