“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are
ordained of God.”
Romans 13.1
Paul’s admonition to the church at Rome reveals that God has established secular government.
It’s ordained purpose is to restrain the evil activities of those who reject God’s authority. The powers of government are not intended to oversee the activities of Christians.
Christ followers are called to live in harmony with God and their neighbors.
God empowers secular authorities to restrain evil intentions of those who reject God. When these governing powers perform their function, they preserve life and promote liberty for all.
Secular authorities operate by God’s authority to administer justice.
Under the law, a person who takes the life of another, must face justice. If it is determined that the person who took another’s life did so in wanton disregard for the sanctity of life, a just sentence must be imposed.
Under the law, a murderer may be required to forfeit their own life.
By imposing such a sentence, the secular power recognises the value God places upon human life and the need to restrain evil. In this regard, doing so fulfils their ordained purpose.
“…But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.”
Romans 13.4
